The long-term care benefit is provided to elderly people limited in their daily activities and dependent on others for most of their daily activities, including: mobility in the home, dressing, washing, eating and controlling secretions; or to people who need supervision in order to prevent danger to themselves or to their surroundings.
In order to determine the dependence of the elderly person on others in performing basic daily activities, an assessor from the National Insurance Institute will visit the elderly person at home and examine their functioning capacity.
The assessor will coordinate the visit in advance with the elderly person or with their contact person. In some cases an assessor will not be sent to examine the elderly person's functioning capacity, and their entitlement for the benefit will be determined based on the documents submitted.
